Rovinj

Apr 12, 2008 in Rovinj

Rovinj is a city in Croatia situated on the north Adriatic Sea. It is located on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula and is a popular tourist resort and an active fishing port. There is a sizeable community of Italians and the town is officially bilingual (Croatian and Italian). Moreover, Istriot, an ancient romance language once widely spoken in this part of Istria, is still spoken by part of the residents (also called Rovignese by those who speak it here). Also called the little jewel of Istria, it is one of the most visited sites in Croatia. Originally, the peninsula on which the city lies was an island, separated from the mainland by a channel.
Rovinj is one of the most developed seaside resorts in Croatia, offering a whole range of visitor opportunities in a picturesque ambience of the ancient town, surrounded by luxuriant pine forests. The hilly landscape is rich with mediterranean vegetation. The scenery constantly changes; now you see plough lands, now vineyards and olive groves, oak trees and pine tree groves that often extend almost to the sea.
Just to the south of Rovinj, Istria is cut by the 45th parallel, so Rovinj is just a half way between the equator and the North pole, which means the most ideal spot on the north hemisphere, both temperature and geographic wise. Jugo, maestral and bura are the most frequent winds.
